CCRP and Digicel Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

Kingston, Jamaica, March 19, 2012: Over 100 seniors enjoyed an afternoon of Irish cheer, Jamaican fun and valuable information, as Digicel joined the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) on Saturday, March 17 for their St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The event was held at the CCRP Headquarters, at 6 Kingsway.

This was the CCRP’s second St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and Digicel provided sponsorship for both. The Irish-based firm’s participation was extra meaningful, as its CEO for Jamaica, Mark Linehan, was born on St. Patrick’s Day. Mr. Linehan, who addressed the gathering briefly, was serenaded with “Happy Birthday” greetings by CCRP members.

The highlight of the afternoon was the “Jamaica 50 Trivia Game Quiz” presented by Karen Hutchinson of Jamaica Cultural Enterprises, and the spot prizes awarded to winners. The latter, including two phones and 50 phone cards, were provided by Digicel, in addition to sponsoring the event.

Good guess! Digicel Jamaica CEO Mark Linehan presents a prize to Michelle Neita, member of the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP) at a St. Patrick's Day get-together last Saturday. Digicel was main sponsor of the CCRP event, held at Caribbean Cottage, Kingsway. Michelle successfully guessed why Mark was not named 'Patrick' though he was born on the Feast Day. Answer: his twin brother is Patrick. Over 100 CCRP members enjoyed the varied programme. CCRP now has a memebership of over 600.

The St. Patrick’s Day event also featured two practical presentations.  Irene Walter, Vice-Chair, CCRP Caring Committee gave a talk on the importance of  “Peer Support for Everyday Living”, while Carlton Raymond of Caribbean Assurance Brokers briefed CCRP members on the US health insurance offered by his company. Mr. Raymond noted that members could earn commissions by referring clients to his company.

Not only did Digicel sponsor the CCRP St. Patrick’s Day celebration last Saturday, but Digicel Jamaica CEO Mark Linehan took time out to celebrate with CCRP members. This was a double celebration for Mark as it was also his birthday! He is seen here with member Irene Walter.

CCRP Founder and CEO Jean Lowrie-Chin shared little known information on Ireland’s Patron Saint, whose day was being observed. She noted that, like those marking Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were better known for the commercialised aspects of modern times. In fact, she reported, St. Patrick, a holy Bishop sent to Ireland in 433 AD by Pope Celestine I, overcame many challenges before he succeeded in bringing the Irish people into the church. He is credited with many miracles, and for building schools, monasteries and churches throughout Ireland. Despite being a powerful defender of the principles of the Catholic faith, he is remembered as a humble, pious and loving man.

The Caribbean Community of Retired Persons was launched in April 2010, with the mission of “working to ensure that the vast talent, experience and wisdom of our seniors will be respected, and that they enjoy the quality of life, which they so richly deserve.”

Digicel Jamaica CEO Mark Linehan was an extra special guest at the CCRP celebration of St. Patrick's Day on Saturday March 17 – not only because Digicel was sponsoring the function, but it was also his birthday! The organization continues to be extremely proactive in serving as a vital resource for retired persons, as well as for those preparing for retirement.
